Fresh Turmeric and Ginger Tea

My fresh turmeric and ginger tea provides good-for-you anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant compounds that provide a range of health benefits.

Having grown up in an Indian household, fresh turmeric and ginger tea was just one of the herbal teas that we enjoyed almost all the time. My mom would make us turmeric tea and turmeric milk when we were young. We always heard how turmeric was very good for healing and it was good to have a little every day. Most of our meals consisted of both herbs in either the fresh or the powdered form.

Benefits of Fresh Turmeric

Turmeric has been known for fighting viral infections, and for general healing. I use it as a patch on wounds, such as burns or cuts, because it helps prevent and fight infections. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and an anti-oxidant and I make and feed my kids this tea almost regularly. Growing up, I suffered a lot from acne and my mom would make me a facemask with turmeric and yogurt. It worked like a charm. So many benefits of a single herb.

The Ingredients for Fresh Turmeric and Ginger Tea

My healing tea ingredients are simple but can be varied slightly depending on your choice. See below for variations.

Fresh Turmeric and Ginger Tea Variations

So many variations are possible with this humble recipe. I love mine with just a slice of lemon and no sweetener. My son likes his with a slice of lemon and a dash of honey. My daughter likes hers with maple syrup.

During the winter months, try adding a tablespoon of my cranberry sauce. In the summer, it tastes amazing with some ice and an addition of some orange juice and some mint leaves. So refreshing. In the fall, try to add a sprinkling of nutmeg or some cinnamon. It’s one of those amazing recipes that can be enjoyed all year round.

Fresh or Powder

I have often been asked what the difference between fresh and dried herbs is. Fresh turmeric is a lot more potent than the dried version of turmeric. Mostly what we find in grocery stores is a lesser version of the fresher ones. Any time you dry something and store it for a long time, it tends to lose its potency. The best way to enjoy this recipe is to use the fresh version of both herbs.

Enjoy my fresh turmeric and ginger tea any way you like:

  • because you like herbal teas.
  • because you like healthy teas.
  • because of its various health benefits.
  • Or simply enjoy it because you just enjoy drinking it.

What is the difference between fresh and powdered turmeric?

Fresh turmeric, like any other fresh herb, is much more potent than the dried version. Yes, you can absolutely replace fresh turmeric with powdered turmeric. However, keep in mind that the colour of your recipe will be much darker with powder. Powder might also leave sediment in teas, however, fresh will not.

How do I prepare fresh turmeric and ginger?

Preparing the herbs is very easy. Wash them very well and slice them with the skin on. Although a lot of people like to peel them, Their skin is edible. If you do want to peel them, then use a spoon and gently scrape off the very thin layer of skin. Alternatively, you can grate them both and use them grated.

Is turmeric and ginger herbal tea healing?

Yes, it definitely is. Both ginger and turmeric are considered anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. They are both very good for keeping infections at bay and thus very good with healing too.
