Building the Base for the Peanut Butter Squares
Since it’s a layered dessert, let’s start with the base.
- In a large bowl, add 2 cups of graham cracker crumbs.
- To that add 1/4 cup of icing sugar.
- Mix the two so that the sugar is well combined into the graham cracker crumbs.
- Next, add 1/2 a cup of melted butter.
- Mix that in so that all of the graham crackers are coated with the butter and become slightly mushy.
- Now comes the fun part. Add 1 cup of natural peanut butter. I prefer the natural peanut butter since it’s made with peanuts only. There is no added sugar or salt. But you can use any kind that you prefer.
- Mix everything well so the peanut butter is evenly distributed.
Setting the First Layer
Let’s get the first layer set before we prepare the second layer.
- Line an 8 inch x 8 Inch baking dish with parchment paper.
- Pour the graham cracker base into it and spread it evenly to the edges.
- Gently lift and tap it on the counter to release any air bubbles.
- Place it in the freezer while you prepare the second layer.
Building the Second Layer of the Peanut Butter Squares
Now we are ready to build the second layer.
- Boil some water in a small pot.
- Once it’s boiled, add 1 cup of dark semisweet chocolate chips (or chips of choice) into a large mixing bowl. Make sure that the bowl does not touch the water.
- Place the bowl on top of the pot and allow it to sit there for a couple of minutes without touching it.
- Once the bottom layer of the chocolate chips starts to melt, continue to mix them until they have all melted and you have a smooth consistency.
- Take the bowl off the pot.
- Now we add more peanut butter. Add 1/3 cup of peanut butter into the chocolate and mix it in well so it’s evenly distributed.
Adding the Chocolate to the Base
Let’s build the Peanut Butter Squares.
- Remove the base from the freezer. By now it should have hardened a little.
- Gently pour the chocolate mix onto the base.
- Using a spatula, spread it evenly to the edges.
- Place the dish into the fridge and let it set for 30 minutes.
Storing the Peanut Butter Squares
These barely last a few days in my house, so storing them for a long term is never an option, however, I tend to make a double batch so it lasts a little longer.
- Slice the peanut butter squares into 24 pieces.
- Gently lift each piece and place it into an air-tight container and place the container in the fridge for up to 10 days.
- If you want to freeze them, place the air-tight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Remove them and thaw them in the fridge overnight before enjoying them.
Can I Vary the recipe for Peanut Butter Squares?
There are variations to the peanut butter squares recipe that I can suggest below.
- Don’t like peanut butter or are allergic, replace it with nut butter of choice.
- Replace the milk or dark chocolate chips with white chocolate chips to alter the recipe.
- Make them gluten-free by replacing the base with gluten-free graham crackers.
- Add some extra chocolate chips to the base. Add about 1/2 a cup of chips into the base once you have added the peanut butter. This adds an additional crunch to the base.

Yes, you can. Since the base of my peanut butter squares is made with graham crackers, you can replace those with vegan graham cracker-style crackers. Instead of the butter that I use in mine, you can use coconut oil.
I use natural peanut butter which is made with peanuts only. You can use smooth or crunchy depending on your choice.
Peanut butter squares will last up to 10 days in the fridge if stored in an air-tight container. They are a great snack to have before basketball or soccer practice.
