What is Agua Fresca?
Agua Fresca is a very popular drink in Mexico, and other parts of Latin America. It’s basically “fresh water”. It is a refreshing summer drink that helps keep the body cool. It is made from fresh fruit, lime, and sweetened with some kind of sweetner. My mango agua fresca is not sweetneed with any artificial sweetner, but instead made with fresh coconut water which is naturally sweet and healthy.
The Mango for Mango Agua Fresca
Let’s start with the mango.
- Peel and chop 2 ripe mangoes. I look for mangoes that are really ripe. The riper they are, they sweeter they tend to be. This helps prevent us from needing to add sugar.
- If you don’t find ripe mangoes, you can always fall back on frozen mango that is readily available in the frozen fruit section these days.
Other Ingredients for Mango Agua Fresca
We can get the rest of the ingredients ready now.
- Juice an entire orange. Set it aside.
- Get the juice of an entire lime and set it aside too.
- Measure and set aside 2 cups of fresh cold coconut water. (Not coconut milk, but coconut water that comes in a carton).
Making the Mango Agua Fresca
Let’s make the mango agua fresca.
- Add the peeled and chopped mango to a blender jug.
- Next add the orange juice, and half the coconut water (1 cup).
- Cover and blend until you have a really smooth consistency. This should not take too long, since the mango is very soft when it’s ripe.
- Once blended, pour the blended juice through a sieve to get rid of any hair.
- Add the remainder of the coconut water, and the lime juice and stir it in well.
- Place it in the fridge and allow it to cool down further – for about 2 hours.
Serving the Mango Agua Fresca
Time to enjoy our delicious mango agua fresca.
- Serve your agua fresca really cold. For added coolness, add a few cubes of ice.
- Turn your agua fresca into a slushy. Add the agua fresca into a blender and add some cubes of ice. Blend everything together and enjoy your delicious slushy.
- I like to serve it with a wedge of lime and mint (for the ones that like the flavour of mint).
