Almond Base
My almond apple crumble squares are made with an almond base that is crisp and moist all at the same time. Let’s get started with making that:
- Add 3/4 cups of raw almonds to a food processor.
- Blend until you have a sandy consistency.
- Alternatively, you can skip this and use store bought almond meal.
- Add 1/3 cup icing sugar, and 2/3 cup of flour to the processor.
- Cover and blend until the flour and sugar have mixed into the almonds. Do not over mix because you want to keep the sandy consistency of the almonds.
- Add 1/2 a cup of cold unsalted butter to the processor and blend so that the butter breaks down. Again, do not over mix.
- Line a 8 x 8 inch baking dish with parchment paper and pour the mixture into it.
- Using a spoon press it down until you have a smooth surface.
- Place the dish into the fridge while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
The Crumble Mix
The topping for my almond apple crumble squares is made with an apple crumble like mixture. Here’s how we put that together:
- Grate 2 large tart apples such as Macintosh or Granny Smith apples.
- Fill a bowl of cold water and place them in the water. This will prevent them from discolouring too much.
- In the same food processor that we blended the base, add 1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour.
- Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar.
- Blend until everything is combined.
- Now add 1/2 cup of unsalted butter and pulse to combine. Do not over mix the butter into the mixture.
- Drain the apples and ensure the water is properly drained from the apples.
- Remove the flour mixture into a bowl and add the grated apples to the flour.
- Mix the apples in so they are evenly distributed.
- Remove the almond base from the fridge and place the apple crumble mix on top of it.
- Spread it out so it’s evenly distributed.
Baking the Almond Apple Crumble Squares
It’s time to get baking.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Place the baking dish onto the middle rack and bake for about 35 minutes.
- To check for doneness, insert a toothpick into the middle and if it comes out clean, your snack is ready.
Storing Suggestions
To serve:
- Allow the Almond Apple Crumble Squares to cool down in the baking dish for about 5 minutes.
- Then remove and place the whole bake (with parchment paper) onto a cookie rack.
- Allow it to cool down completely before slicing.
- Cut them into 16 squares.
- The squares will last in the fridge for up to 1 week in an air tight container.

A good apple crumble topping is made with 3 simple ingredients. These are – flour, sugar, and butter. The combination of these three ingredients makes the best crumble topping.
The secret to a good crispy topping is butter. If you skimp on butter, the topping will be soggy. But, if you use the right amount of butter, your crumble topping will be nice and crispy.
For best results, use cold butter. As cold butter melts in the oven, it helps the crumble crisp up. Melted butter doesn’t work the same way. It makes the crumble spread out and get soggy.
